3 Weeks – ksh 200
4 weeks – Ksh 260 .
Fertile Eggs – Ksh 900 per tray.
Heat is required for up to 4 weeks therefore for farmers who don’t have brooder can buy our 4 weeks old chicks
The minimum order for chicks is 50 (if you are buying chicks under 2 week old), this is to make sure they keep each other warm while they are being transported to their new home. For farmers buying 3+ weeks old chicks – minimum order is 10 chicks
KARI Improved Kienyeji Chicken was developed after years of intensive research under the National Poultry Development Programme.
Vaccination
Before leaving our hatchery vaccinates the chicks from the deadly Marek’s disease . We also provides the farmers with a vaccination schedule against:- Gumboro Newcastle, Fowl pox etc
KARI improved Kienyeji are easy to maintain since they can be kept under the free range system or deep litter depending on your financial ability and objectives.
Those who want them to mature faster or produce more eggs should keep them in a semi-intensive or deep litter system. This way the chickens don’t spend a lot of energy. As mentioned about, KARI Improved chicken are dual-purpose, therefore farmers have an option of keeping them as layers, for meat or both.
When fed with quality feeds available from accredited manufacturers, a hen can reach up to 1.5kg in five months and a cock weighs 2.1kg. A hen starts laying at 5 month old and can produce between 200 and 250 eggs a year, while Kuroiler lays 150 – 180 eggs. KALRO hens lays bigger eggs (size) compared to both Kuroiler and Kienyeji.

How many Kari chicken can I keep on a 55’X20′ sleeping area with 60’X30′ open area? And do you have a buy back program i.e. can I offload my eggs thru you?

A1. Laying weight id around 1.8kgs
A2. They will start laying at around 5 months depending on how you feed them (less feeds means they will delay in starting to lay)
A3. They produce 200 – 250 eggs per year; this depends on the feeds too and also you need to remember chicken are easily stressed so you need to make sure you eliminate anything that can cause them stress (if they are stressed = stop laying = less eggs)
A4. I have added the feeds consumption above from a day old till they start laying.
KARI and Kuroilers are almost the same the only difference are the laying weight of Kuroiler whick would be over 2kgs. Also Kuroiler consume more feeds compared to KARI I would say around 15% more. In addition Kuroiler lay less eggs per year (150 – 180) and smaller eggs to KARI, although Kuroiler are bigger than KARI they produce smaller eggs; don’t ask me why, no idea.

When do you want to receive the chicks? 1 chicken will requre a space of 2 sq ft, therefore a house of 2000 chicken will need to be 4000Sq ft (133.5ft by 30ft). We have other breeds but we haven’t started selling them, it will take a few more months before we start offering them to farmers. However, we have Peking ducks now for sale. The prices will be added soon on our website.

Hi. Can the kari and kurolia chicken be reared on free range. How long then you will they start to lay eggs and be able to be ready for sale (meat)

Yes they can be reared together as free range. The only problem I’ve noticed is that they will take time to grow because they lose alot of energy running around. You also need to make sure they get enough food because they will have eaten all the grass around in a couple of weeks.

can kari kienyeji brood to hatch chicks by themselves or you need another hatcher?

Kari hardly go broody; you will get about 5 out of 100 hen that would want to sit on the eggs, and most of the time they wont go all the way till the eggs are hatched. they will loose interest half way through. But you might get some that would go all the way and be good mothers.
Kari are made to give you more eggs and that means making sure they do not waste their time sitting on eggs. While other chicken are sitting on the eggs the Kari hen is still laying. You can use our incubation service to get your eggs incubated at ksh20 per eggs.

How old should a fertilized egg be before being taken to the brooder?eg,1 month after being laid or age doesn’t matter?

It should not be more than 10 days old. We advice farmers to try their best to incubate them at 7 days (week old), but if you cant then make sure its no more than 10 days old. Hatchability drops with age.

You can select the number of male and females that you want, but day old chicks and week old chicks are a bit hard to tell, we can try to select them for you with a 90% accuracy.

Unfortunately we do not sell less than 50 chicks; Day old to 2 weeks old.
if you want to buy 5 chicks you will have to buy from 3 weeks old and above. The reason being, they need to keep each other warm as their travel and if they are below 50 chicks they will die of cold by the time they reach your home/farm.
At 3 weeks old and above they are old enough they do not need heating
